TEAM VET ROLLS UP SLEEVES TO PROTECT COMMUNITIES THROUGH RABIES VACCINATION DRIVE
The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture’s veterinary team has rolled up its sleeves in the fight against rabies, taking the message of prevention directly to communities through a province-wide vaccination and awareness campaign.
As part of International Rabies Awareness Month, the Department launched Rabies Awareness Week, bringing together veterinary professionals, pet owners and community members to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing the spread of this deadly but preventable disease.
Today, the campaign reached Ward 8 in Ngqushwa Local Municipality, where residents gathered at the Peddie Extension Hall for an awareness session and free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats.
Led by Ngqushwa State Veterinarian Dr Chamu Maluleke, the veterinary team provided essential services to community members, including rabies vaccinations and free pet treatments such as deworming. Due to the rainy weather conditions, planned castration and sterilisation procedures could not be conducted and will be rescheduled.
Dr Maluleke emphasised that vaccination remains one of the most effective ways communities can protect themselves, their families and their animals from rabies.
Rabies Awareness Month is observed globally during September, with World Rabies Day commemorated on 28 September 2026. The day is coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control and aims to promote collective action towards eliminating rabies worldwide.
The 2026 World Rabies Day theme, “Stronger Together,” highlights the importance of a One Health approach, recognising the connection between human health, animal health and the environment in addressing rabies.
The global goal remains achieving zero human rabies deaths by 2030.
Through continued vaccination campaigns, community education and collaboration with stakeholders, the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture remains committed to safeguarding animal health and protecting communities across the province.
